In general
The Artist Residency Schloss Balmoral awards residency scholarships for visual artists and curators in Bad Ems. These are funded by the Ministry of Science, Further Education and Culture. The scholarships vary according to duration and applicant group:
1. each year we award visual artists from all over the world
– three 4-month residency fellowships
– two 8-month residency fellowships
– one four-month residency grant for an artist-at-risk
2. each year we award curators from all over the world
– two 4-month attendance grants
3. in alternating years, we award a residency grant for four months to
– educator-in-residence (2025)
– theorists (2026)
The scholarships for the Artists Residency Schloss Balmoral (ARSB) are awarded on the basis of a new annual theme.
Furthermore, we facilitate and coordinate the awarding of grants for other residencies, for which only artists with a connection to Rhineland-Palatinate can apply. This category includes scholarships in:

ISBA, Burgund-Franche-Comté
(3-month scholarship)
Paris, Cité Internationale des Arts
(two 6-month scholarships)

Two 6-month location-independent project scholarships
There are no thematic requirements for these scholarships.
A connection to Rhineland-Palatinate applies (and/or): Anyone who was born in Rhineland-Palatinate, lives, works or has studied fine arts with a degree. Proof of residence/location in Rhineland-Palatinate as part of a scholarship stay in the region is not considered a fulfilled application criterion.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Since 2015, artists with a connection to Rhineland-Palatinate may apply for a state scholarship a maximum of three times. This means: a maximum of three times for a project grant, for example, three times for a residency in Paris, etc. Condition: The interval between applications must be two years
