Who drums at the drummer’s funeral?
A conversation about curation, love and work with Farieda Nazier (FADA, University of Johannesburg) and Kamogelo Walaza (WALAZAS PRACTICE)
——
One often wonders: What does a curator actually do apart from signing with their name? When artists morph into curators so easily, saving project costs, imagining and enacting exhibitions with precision?

This conversation intends to counter understandings of the curator being a self-abolishing creature in the world that art makes. Deliberately held on June 16th, the day in which the Soweto Uprising of 16th June 1976 is commemorated, we look at the responsibilities of/for freedom that the role of the curator is built on:
The holding of space. The holding of hands. The carrying (lots of things). The sharpening of a position into an aesthetic. The, at times, life-long intellectual and sensuous relation between artist and curator, which, in the good version, elevates both practices and minds. Also: The traveling, the privilege for some, the champagne, the inequality of a non-unified working class.

The Artist Residency Schloss Balmoral intends to push discussion around relations in art. For this, we forge bonds with different organisations and partners. This time: FADA, University of Johannesburg – with whom we will co-publish our arguments – and Sophiatown Circles – a non profit organisation working on archives and care, this year under the theme of “New Agreements”.
