Badr El Hammami

ARSB artist 2025

Badr El Hammami, born in 1979 in Morocco, he lives and works in Marseille in France. Badr El Hammami experiments poetically with the concept of borders, through an ensemble of installations, texts, photographs, videos and performances. He questions this arbitrary notion which makes the foreigner. His status as a foreigner in France allows him a paradoxal reading of maps and territories. When Badr looks at a map, he does not see «juxtaposed countries or forms» but « a network of lines, a rhizomic structure linking all territories ». In Badr El Hammami’s artistic production, it is always a question of otherness, negotiation, co-construction and exchange. In numerous projects, his pratice is contemplated in situ in the relationship he can develop with peaple around him. He seeks to create shapes that respond to the contexts of prodution in which they are included. In his works, notion of movement, migration, borders and politics go through more personal issues linked to the memory and to the family. Badr El Hammami works on this entanglement that binds the small and the great story. Via simple gestures (painting and burning postcards, splitting a chess game by a wall, etc) or more complex creations built over time (study of correspondence by audiotapes between France and the Maghreb), he elaborates a work, in which speech circulation seems like a vital need.
