Sasha Kurmaz

Sasha Kurmaz, b. 1986 in Kyiv, Ukraine, where he currently lives and works. In 2005, he received a Junior Specialist Diploma (Bachelor’s degree) in Automation and Computer Integrated Technologies from the Kyiv Electromechanical College in Kyiv. In 2008, he received a Specialist Diploma (Master’s degree) in Design from the National Academy of Managerial Staff of Culture and Arts in Kyiv.

Sasha is an interdisciplinary artist. He uses various media and approaches in his artistic practice, including photography, video, public intervention, performative situations, and various forms of social engagement and collaborative practice. His work focuses on urban space, society, its development and transformations, the dynamics of relationships between citizens and the state, and the impact of war and its consequences on the lives of both individuals and communities.

He has participated in many international group exhibitions and festivals, including exhibitions at Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art (Poland), ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (Germany), Künstlerhaus Vienna (Austria), Mystetskyi Arsenal (Ukraine), Saatchi Gallery (UK), Skovde Art Museum (Sweden),  Albertinum – Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (Germany), Galeria Arsenał (Poland), Latvian Museum of Photography (Latvia), Museum Folkwang Essen (Germany), DOX Center for Contemporary Art (Czech Republic), Museum de Fundatie (the Netherlands), and Akademie der Künste Berlin (Germany). Has received the C/O Berlin Talent Award 2016 (Germany), the Kazimir Malevich Artist Award 2020 (Ukraine/Poland), and the Grand Prix Images Vevey 2023 (Switzerland).
